Virginia-Based Public Media Company Commissions LEGACY LIST WITH MATT PAXTON

MY Entertainment (MYE), Michael Yudin’s New York-based production company, has announced that PBS member station VPM out of Richmond, Va., has commissioned Legacy List with Matt Paxton, to be produced by MYE in a ground-breaking public-private venture. The show will be produced in partnership with Shipyard Entertainment and distributed by American Public Television (APT) to over 80% of the US market via more than 270 public-television stations.

A specialist in cross-border format collaboration, MYE is now set to shop the format internationally and has agreed a deal for international sales to be handled by Kew Media Distribution.

Based on an original format concept by MYE entitled Hidden Assets, Legacy List with Matt Paxton turns on the premise that the most important museum in the world may well be in your parents’ basement, attic, closet — or even under their floorboards. Billed as a cross between Antiques Roadshow and History Detectives, the 6 x 60 mins series combines the best of non-fiction storytelling with public-television sensibilities to explore the memories and moments, secrets and surprises, histories and hidden treasures that come to light when clearing out a much-loved family home.

The show’s host is Matt Paxton, who is moving to US public television after nine seasons fronting A&E’s hit show Hoarders. Paxton is joined by a team of expert collectors and advisers, including Mike Kelleher, a walking encyclopaedia of pop culture, collectibles and antiques; Avi Hopkins, a military memorabilia expert; and Jaime Ebanks, a specialist in fashion.

Legacy List with Matt Paxton, which is now in production, is slated to air on public television nationwide in early 2020. The sponsoring station, VPM PBS (formerly known as WCVE), is based in Paxton’s hometown of Richmond, Va.

Michael Yudin, founder and CEO of MY Entertainment, said: “MYE continues to look for new business models and relationships to help it succeed in the new-media environment — and we’ve found the perfect partner in WCVE, which not only has a clear vision of the future of public broadcasting, but is well on the way to realising it. As one of the few US producers that’s as embedded in the international market as we are in our home territory, all our instincts tell us that Legacy List with Matt Paxton has the makings of a worldwide hit. While public television is naturally focused on serving American audiences, these human stories of love, loss and remembrance transcend local boundaries. It doesn’t matter if you’re in Virginia or Vienna, there’s nothing more precious than family treasure.”

Steve Humble, chief content officer at VPM, Virginia’s home for public media, said: “This was a rare opportunity to pair a nationally known, home-grown TV talent like Matt Paxton with a story-rich format that’s absolutely right for our audiences, helmed by a skilled, seasoned and patient partner like MYE. We couldn’t pass it up. This project is one of several that signals a new era in our organization’s role in public media.”

Neil Patel, executive producer and co-founder with Matt Paxton of Shipyard Entertainment, said: “Matt and I kept uncovering these rich stories about people going through big life transitions, like downsizing beloved family homes and settling estates. We knew we had to tell these compelling stories, not just on TV but, eventually, across other platforms too. So we went looking for the right partners to help us make it happen. . PBS station VPM (formerly known as WCVE) and MYE became those perfect creative, financial and distribution partners for us, and public television has offered us the kind of independence and creative freedom that is hard to find elsewhere. We couldn't be happier."
